Magical T asked:

I know that this is a nutty question but since all the alleged corruption in horse racing I really would likie a sensible answer.

Also in poker are there such things as strategy or is it a lucky game?

I think that the only way to win in gambling is not to play, honestly.

well, in poker it’s mostly about outplaying your opponents - knowing their tells, and not having any of your own, knowing how much to push them, when to bluff, etc. It’s all about reading people.

as for horses - don’t know about that. go for an underdog, and hope you win.

Of course, as they say, the best way to win at gambling is not to play at all.

With all forms of gambling there is always a certain amount of luck involved. With horse racing it does help to KNOW about the horses running. Study the form as deeply as you can, but this can never give you a guaranteed winner. Also never do multiple bets such as yankees or hienz. Stick to single bets. Bookies hate nothing more than big bets ‘on the nose’.

With poker it all comes down to practice. Learn the odds and have fun.

buy yourself a casino or start some horse riding.

I don’t profess to being a top notch gambler, but the thing I have found with horse racing is that if you spend the time doing your homework you stand a better chance of winning. Look at how the horse performs in various conditions eg. the going and the size of the field. Ultimately though the horses is more down to luck than anything else.

Poker is a game of chance not luck. Depending on the version you are playing depends on whether you are reliant on the cards or your talents, but either way you need to see a chance and take it. Remember the adage “if you can’t see a mug (easy target to pick on) at the table, its because its you”.

i dont know about horses but poker ;

you need to first know how to play the game and then you need to play it for a few years to gain experiance then i have found the best way to make money is either in a low entry no limit cash game or in a sit and go tourney!? remember to walk away when your winning and never chase your loses!

In poker you can have strategies and plays. Add in the pschological factor and you can learn to read and play the other players. Its focus is less about the card but about how you play.

With horses, don’t bother, its an industry designed to make you lose. Too many variables outside of logical reasoning, and you don;t know if they are being manipulated. You can learn everything about a race, the course, the horses and riders, and form and still there is NO way of getting a good idea of who will win. The only way to win more often than lose is by insdier tips! How the hell can they be more relaible than tons of research?
You answer that question yourself and stick to poker, you have loads more hance of winning, and its how you play. Not like horses where you pick ahorse, spend your money and just wait. You cannot influence anything.

You can win at poker without a good hand, because you can influence the result.

I have been playing poker and betting on horses for over 25 years. I believe it is mostly luck. No sure way to win. You win some but lose more. You can learn to be a good poker player but still need luck to win. You can study the horses but the best looking ones seldom win.

Professional gamblers usually bet horses ‘each way’ so that they get a return if the horse is placed. Keepan eye on the prices. If a horse starts with long odds but comes in quickly then it is usually worth a bet.

Poker is a game of skill, but your chances of winning depend greatly on the cards you get…a good player can still win even with poor cards if he bets correctly and can read/bluff his opponents.

I would say poker is 50 % luck and 50% skill, there is a strategy to it and the best players know their chances of winning on every hand they have and that determines most of the time what they do. Practice as much as you can and do research to get good but it may take you years before you become good enough to make serious money from it.

As for horse racing - study the form, conditions, course, jockey, trainer and look at the horse on the day
To stand a chance of winning dont bet on every race, chose 1 or 2 horses for the day and do as much research as you can.

You are also able to lay horses, betting on them to lose, and if they win you lose money. Potentially this is far better as think of all those red hot favourites who have lost you money over the years

The essential difference between horse racing and poker is that in the former you are playing against the house. The house will always use clever math to stack the odds against you. Without a house edge, the house would be out of business. With lots of skill and knowledge and a little luck you can do well with horse betting, but very few people will be long term winners.

Poker is much better because you are playing other players, not the house. The casino does not care if you never win or you win every game. They are getting paid in either case. The house disinterest in the outcome of the game means that as long as the game is fair (no cheating) you are pitting your skill against the others. If you have more skill, you will always win in the long run.

Poker can be discounted as a lucky game when you look at world class events like the World Series Of Poker. In the late 80s Johnny Chan won the main event back to back and came second the year after that. The odds of that happening if poker was a luck game are infinitesimally small. In 2004 Greg Raymer beat several thousand people to win the main event, and in 2005 he beat over 5600 people to finish 25th. Again if it were a luck game it would be highly unlikely for the same players to consistently beat the game in this manner. T.J.Cloutier is another good example. He has finished in the money 46 times in World Series Of Poker events.

Poker also has the advantage right now of a surge in popularity. Every week hundreds of new players are learning the game, and due to inexperience they are just desperate to give their money away!

The best advice I have is to study, study, study.

There are a lot of good books about betting on horse racing, the best of which is Andy Beyer’s, “Beyer on Speed”.

For poker, there are tons of good books including “Super System 2″ by Doyle Brunson and many good books by David Sklansky.

Read up on both and you will improve your chances at winning on both horses and poker.

If I knew a way, I would be rich and keep it as a secret.

Can’t help you on horses.

But for poker, while luck does play a part, there is enough skill involved so that the skillful player will dominate if you play long enough.

Especially in a cash game, when you add up the results after a year’s worth of casino visits.
Luck plays a bigger role in tournaments.

mejulieandteddy March 18, 2009

you need a good knowledge of them before you start playing for cash.ive managed bookies for CORALS and WILLIAM HILLS,you get punters come in who think they have a dead cert but its a donkey and comes last.you need to compare the horses stats to the relevant track its running at,current form and past.its rating, what surface it prefers, how many days since last run.you should never back a horse each way with odds less than 4/1 cos if it only gets placed then you are losing.anymore questions or advice then please email me, im only to glad to offer advice.thanks

I used to work for a bookmaker and the only people who won were the ones who only had a bet every now and again because they had some inside information or were particularly good at studying the form and only bet when they were convinced a horse was going to win, in short, pick your bets very carefully and bet big rather than trying to pick out lots of winners with smaller stakes.
It is also my opinion that the better the race the better the form stands up, so if you stick to the better horses you may have more luck, but that is just a personal opinion and others may disagree.

If you are just starting poker, start with very small stakes or for fun either with friends or on one of the internet sites until you get used to the strength of any given hands against the probability of someone else at the table having a stronger hand, obviously the more people there are at the table the stronger the hand needs to be to be likely to winning, also you need to work out the value of any given bet, that is the amount you are wagering against the likelihood you will win the pot and how big the pot is likely to be, a bit like odds in horse-racing (risk versus reward), then start introducing bluffing in to your game and trying to tell when others might be bluffing and then start introducing strategies based on past hands you have played, obviously the more hands you play the more experience you will have to draw on.

Remember it is all about percentages and probability at the end of the day as well as a little instinct and the more you play the better you will get. I would also advise you that the more money you play for the better the players will tend to be so try to find a level you are comfortable at and more imporatntly have a chance at winning at and don’t try to move up a level until you are ready.

Also freeroll or small stake tournaments are a good starting point, there are thousands of them on the internet every day and they will give you experience as well as seeing how others try to win, they’re also great fun. Try Pacific Poker or Party Poker but there are lots of others and i’m sure you will find one you like. good luck.

Play poker with the jockeys. Lose and pick up a tip. bet on the winning horse.

I don’t know much about horse racing, but there is plenty of strategy in poker. Check out for details.
